Research that Benefits Children and Families-Uplifting Stories

If I was able to pick any topic to research about childcare I would choose Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder because so many children are being diagnosed with this disorder. Most teachers do not recognize this disorder or how to teach or support children with it. Researching ADHD will be very beneficial for teachers because it will help them to meet each child’s individual needs. Subtopics would include:
  • The different types of ADHD and symptoms.
  • Alternatives of treatments taken other than medication
  • Causes of ADHD.

  1. Hi Erika,
Researching ADHD would be beneficial for teachers, children and families. I agree that many teachers may not understand ADHD and know how to teach or support children with the disorder. Although we don't want to label a child, at the same time if we suspect that a child is exhibiting behaviors associated with ADHD, we can inform the child's parents of our observations and use teaching strategies that will better meet the needs of the child.

  2. Erika, I agree that ADHD research would be extremely beneficial to the field as a general knowledge base rather than a specialty. I believe that there are cases within the field that could be handled differently and more appropriately if providers had the knowledge of specific cases, like ADHD. Great information!

  3. Erika,
I think researching ADHD would be a great topic and very beneficial. I know several children that have been diagnosed, as well as my husband. I think that ADHD can be underdiagnosed and overdiagnosed in certain situations. Some children may not have ADHD or a mild form and they are treated as if they have it as well as the alternative. I think that finding different treatments other than medication would be beneficial to know as well!

  4. ADHD has became the normal because so many kids are being diagnosed with ADHD. As a head start teacher, so many children this year has enrolled and be diagnosed with ADHD so this would be a great topic to research and get abetter understand and the effect that this disease have on children.

  5. ADHD would be a great topic to research. Another subtopic could be the differences between ADHD and dyslexia. Both can present similar signs and behaviors. This is currently an important topic in my house. My son was diagnosed with ADHD about a year and a half ago. Now the school believes he may have been misdiagnosed and that he had dyslexia. We are now in the process of going through developmental eye examinations to see if is related to vision or if it is dyslexia.

  7. This is a wonderful topic to research. Now, some of the children 'diagnosed' with ADHD could benefit from some good old fashioned discipline, while others would truly benefit from the results of any research, especially in the area of medication. I am not a proponent for meds, but some children benefit from a small dose to help them stay calm and focus throughout the school day. And just in case you're wondering, I have over nine years experience with special needs children and four of them in the area of behavior specialist. I have seen just about any behavior you can name. In many cases children ran wild at home and would come to school expecting the same liberties. And a harsh awakening awaited them in our controlled classroom. I had to have many candid conversations with parents and recommended strategies that would benefit the children and some included discipline. ADHD should be carefully diagnosed. Every child who can't focus does not necessarily have ADHD. It could be something else.

  8. Hi Erika,

Awesome topic to research. This to me seem like is an epidemic that is invading early childhood children and families. I have worked in Child Protective Services and continue to work with children today. The number of children I see on a regular bases that are diagnosed with ADHD is incredible. To me it seems as though the only "fix" is medication. Sad, because I feel as though it does more harm than good. So, more research to learn more about this would be great!
